TOP TRENDS FROM NEW YORK FASHION WEEK SPRING 2012

New York Fashion Week's Hottest Trends
New York Fashion Week was the first of the fashion capitals to debut their Spring 2012 collections. From bold citrus hues to plunging necklines, Art Deco color-blocking to ladylike frivolities, we have gathered the hottest trends fresh off the runway.

Art Deco
Elongated silhouettes, clean angular lines and blocks of bold color accompanied with pencil-thin detailing all depict the art deco trend that took the Spring 2012 runways by storm. J. Mendel's collection was particularly restrained in it's sleek silhouettes and showed Art Deco influence in ever piece from his beaded column dress to his color-blocked chiffon dresses. BCBG's line heavily featured geometric designs and Carolina Herrera was also inspired by the distinct artistic styling.

Peplum Perfect
For a flashback to the '80s, pretty skirt peplums are back in style! While Badgley Mischka took to the trend in a major way with decadent layers of ruffles at the waist of his vibrant frocks, Jason Wu flirted with the style in a delicate feminine pink pencil skirt and Cushnie et Ochs made the playful adornment sophisticated on a white sheath dress.

Lemon Lime
It was unusual to see a New York Fashion Week collection without a statement pop of lemon-lime citrus. From Oscar de la Renta's romantic gowns to Doo.Ri overtly cool draped ensembles, designers were flooding the runways with the vibrant hue.

Metallics
When design extremes like Calvin Klein and Hervé Léger are both offering enticing silvers and golds, it's safe to say metallics will be a strong fashion force for Spring. While HL offered us sexy gladiator styles, Elie Tahari and Chado Ralph Rucci dazzled with shining shifts.

Digital Prints
This season digital printing has shown up in the most unexpected of places. The Reem Acra and Vera Wang runways, for instance, debuted their entry into the detailed print technique reminiscent of Alexander McQueen. Reed Krakoff is a more likely source of such powerful imagery, but still stunned us with a captivating canary print.

Off-Shoulder
The sexiest show of skin this season on the runway? The shoulders. Oscar de la Renta romanced us with a white gathered gauzy ensemble while Rodarte offered a dramatic artistic interpretation of the trend. We're certain we'll see Marchesa's floating ecru creation on the red carpet in no time.

Pretty in Pink
With the recent lust for ladylike looks, it's no surprise pink was a favorite color on the runway for Spring 2012. J Crew played with sequins and color-blocking for a playful ensemble, while Jason Wu appeased our inner little girl with a ruffled taffeta ball skirt. Peter Som went the flirty route in a hot pink feathered frock.

Sophisticated Leather
Leather is certainly not new to the runway, but this season's approach to the material was particularly creative and used in unexpected ways. Doo.Ri adorned her pleated knit gown with a distinct waistband and neckline made of tonal leather while Yigal Azrouël made a sleek high-waisted pant from a vibrant orange skin.

Color-Blocking
It looks like the color-blocking trend isn't going anywhere, folks! From Victoria Beckham's sleek sheaths to Marc by Marc Jacobs' mod shift shirt dresses, the play with contrast is here to stay. For another season, anyway.

Pleats
This season we witnessed the use of pleats in all colors and styles at NYFW. Christian Siriano's elegant maxi-skirts paired with simple tees blew us away, particularly a high-waisted pleated citrine number. Luca Luca's Bianca Jagger inspired collection played with delicate pleats and polka-dots while Rachel Zoe took her signature '70s route with the trend.

Tangy orange
Orange was another impactful hue to hit the red carpet for Spring '12. Jenny Packham's elegant collection was graced with a vibrant chiffon gown while Tibi and Marc by Marc Jacobs took the trend in another direction with short mod silhouettes.

The Shirt Dress
Nothing is as sweet and sophisticated as the crisp white shirt dress. The preppy trend took to the runway this year in countless collections with subtle variations. Christian Siriano put down the tulle for a chic collared number brightened with a chartreuse belt. Even Doo.Ri, the master of draped knits, dabbled in the crisp style for her Spring '12 line.

Drop Waist
Our jaws weren't the only things dropping for NYFW's phenom styles, waistlines were also reaching new lows. Tadashi Shoji, Chado Ralph Rucci and Zac Posen paid homage to past decades with hip-sweeping waistlines.
